Invasiveness

A1. What is the ability of the plant to establish amongst intact native environments?
Answer: Low

Comments: It is densely tufted with short underground runners. In ideal conditions it can grow at a rate of up to 70cm per week and can be very invasive [referring to C. purpureum x typhoides] (Bellinger Landcare Inc. 2022). Bana grass does not produce viable seed. It is deep rooted (Cameron, A. pers. comm. 19 May 2022). The bana grass growing at coastal plains is in several rows, about 13m long growing as wind breaks and insect refuge. It is cut and watered regularly and it seeds occasionally but it never spreads. The only way to propagate it is from cuttings (Finney, M. pers. comm. 19 May 2022). Forms bamboo-like, densely tufted clumps which become invasive in bushland vegetation. Is an opportunistic weed with the ability to persist in disturbed areas, out-competing other native vegetation. In north Queensland, populations have become naturalised [referring to C. purpureum] (QDAF 2000).

Comments: Bana grass is grown in both the tropical and subtropical regions with rainfall from 750 to 2500 mm per year and a temperature range of 25–40°C. Generally it grows very well in regions that receive high rainfall, but its deep rooted system adapts it to drought risk areas that receive less rainfall. It can grow on a wide variety of soils with a range of nutrient levels, if they have good drainage (Matore 2019). The original climatch model produced a compatibility score of 10. This score was rejected by the Weed Risk Technical Committee due to the grass’s dependency on rainfall and it was agreed that the data used to feed the model likely came from irrigated plantings rather than wild-growing weeds. Based on evidence for bana grass requiring at least 1000mm of annual rainfall or riverine habitat the climatch model was re-run with any data points that occurred in areas with less than 1000mm of rainfall removed. This produced a lower score of 7 out of 10, however; the image was not a reasonable fit, as the points that are at or above 7 (orange) fall well south of the 1000mm rainfall cutoff line. Due to the poor fit of this model, the default threshold Climatch suitability score of 7 (see page 27 of the NTWRMS User Guide) was adjusted to 8 for this assessment, which returned a score of 2.2 , with the cut-off line being brought north to around the Katherine region, and just south. It does include some regions in the south of the NT, which are in error, but it seems to be the best fit (WRTC 2022).

The large flower heads range in colour from yellow to purple, and can be up to 30 cm in length. It is similar in appearance to sugar cane, but with narrower leaves and does a shorter height [referring to C. purpureum] (QDAF 2000). There is no herbicide currently registered for control of elephant grass in Queensland; however, an off-label use permit (PER82307) allows the use of glyphosate at up to 2 L (360 g/L formulation)/100L water for the control of environmental weeds in non-agricultural areas, bushland and forests as listed in Table 1. Permit PER11463 allows for the use of imazapyr and imazapyr + glyphosate at the rates listed in Table 1. Control will be more effective if applied to regrowth after slashing.
